Public Access Defibrilators

Public Access Defibrilators

A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops beating. CPR and the use of a defibrillator before the ambulance arrives doubles the chance of survival. Every second counts, if you don't do something the chance of survival will decrease - every minute by 10%

PADs are being installed in commercial premises, community buildings, schools and religious institutions.
All AEDs should be stored in a protective cabinet In order to minimise the risk of damage/ theft, some AED models will require a code to be provided before the AED can be accessed, whilst others will let off an alarm once the cabinet has been opened.

The Resuscitation Council advises that owners or managers of an AED are not expected to carry out any maintenance tasks other than replacing the battery and used adhesive pads  when necessary, and replacing out-of-date disposable items such as adhesive pads, razors (used only for removing any excess hair on the chest)
and medical gloves. AEDs should be checked regularly and frequently, and arrangements to replace electrode pads if the AED is used should be in place.

A commuinty public access defibrilator is:

  • A defibrillator suited to purpose i.e for untrained users

  • A cabinet that is from an experienced ISO-rated manufacture, IP-rated, meeting BSi regulations.

  • A Comprehensive Governance program and ongoing support to ensure the defibrillator is maintained and rescue-ready as often as possible over it lifetime.

  • Community Training provided

  • Insurance advice (it is recommended to have AED insurance we can provide insurer details to you)

Ribble Valley First Aiders is committed to offering a high standard of community defibrillation projects and is the only only local group that works with the commuinty to get AEDS installed in there area.

Whilst is it is very easy to simply buy from the internet, just like the placement of playground equipment, there are liabilities involved. The benefits of having community defibrillators are unquestioned, but these are medical devices and come under special guidance. Therefore, our aim is to bring to the attention of communities a holistic view of the issues and process, and offer simple methods of making sure the right equipment, the right processes, the right policies are all followed.

A community defibrillation project is not about a defibrillator and a cabinet. It is much more and should form a central part of any community resilience programme, which will include community emergency first aid training. Communities also need to be clear and understand there are there are grants available but you need to ensure you meet the criteria for these grants,

Some grants are:

British Heart Foundation

The National Lottery Community Fund

Do i need training to use an AED

You don’t need training to use an AED, but training will help give you the confidence you need should you have to perform CPR and use the AED in the future. Basic CPR and use of the AED is a simple skill to learn, but one that can save a life. We can also help with training
